Student Senate at Sudbury Catholic Schools donates over 150 coats to those in need

The Student Senate at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board has given the gift of warmth this holiday season! The fundraising campaign was spearheaded by the Student Senate, which is comprised of 10 secondary students representing all four secondary schools in the Board.

The group encouraged staff and students to donate clean, gently used coats of all sizes to families in need. Working with Derek Cashmore of Cooper Equipment Rentals, the coats will be donated to the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre and then made available to those in need in our region and in other communities throughout Northern Ontario. The original ask was 100 coats, however the Sudbury Catholic School community surpassed that goal, donating over 150 coats and over 50 winter accessories including hats, scarves and mitts to help families stay warm this Winter.

“The Student Senate members are not just leaders in their schools, but leaders in the greater community,” said Amanda Barry, Teacher Facilitator of the Student Senate. “The students embody the Catholic Graduate Expectations and model stewardship through their actions and their love for others. They have more plans to serve the local community in 2019, so stay tuned!”

“The amount of spirit and compassion exemplified by everyone involved is truly breathtaking,” said Kira Gouchie, Student Trustee and member of the Student Senate. “It was so amazing to see all the students come together for a great cause during the holiday season.”

The Student Senate coat drive ran from November 19 – December 7, 2018. The group is hoping to make the drive an annual fundraiser as part of their Student Senate initiatives.

Summer school credits for secondary students

In order for a student to be eligible to complete a summer school credit, they must be enrolled in a recognized Ontario Secondary School. All summer school registrations are done through the guidance department at the school that the student is currently enrolled in. There are a variety of secondary level credits at both the applied and academic level available this summer. For more information about the availability of specific courses, please contact your guidance department.

All secondary summer school credits are offered through eLearning (including summer coop). Students need access to a computer and reliable internet access in order to access their course material and submit completed work. Summer courses start on Tuesday, July 3rd and run until Friday, August 3rd this year. The deadline to register for summer school is Friday, June 15th at 2:00 pm.

Students typically require 4-6 hours per day Monday-Friday in order to complete an elearning summer course. All Sudbury Catholic students must attend a mandatory in-class orientation session offered at St. Albert Adult Education Centre on Tuesday, July 3rd between 9-11am.

For more information, please feel free to email Jillian Ospina.

Secondary Students Walk for Water!

Our Secondary schools all completed a Walk for Water on Friday, April 27! Students talked about the importance of the WE Foundation goal in providing 50 thousand people with clean water for life. Students fundraised for the cause, and completed walks within their individual school communities. Great job from all participating students! Secondary Students Participate in Diversity Day!

Sudbury Catholic District School Board hosted its first ever Diversity Day for secondary students on Friday, May 5th, with the goal of breaking down stereotypes and supporting all students in our schools, in particular racialized students. The morning was spent meeting with young people from different cultures and learning about their experiences living and attending school in Sudbury. We also spent time examining who has power in our world and what we can do in the face of oppression, colonialism and white privilege. The afternoon was work time, where each high school got together with school mates and determined a campaign to bring their learning of diversity back to their schools.

A beautiful day of learning and action, determining “what we all share” as we move forward towards a more equitable future for all!

Board visits Chongqing #37 Secondary School in China

On November 11th 2016, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board had the pleasure of visiting Chongqing #37 Secondary School in China. We visited a class, the grounds, the bridge of success and had the privilege of witnessing the morning daily physical activity.

This school offers a high quality education to over 4,000 students from grades 7 to 12. Hopefully, some of the staff from the school will come to Sudbury to visit our schools and to discuss the possibility of a “sister” school partnership in the future. The school celebrated it’s 60th anniversary in 2015 and we are convinced that it will continue to grow in the next 60 years thanks to its dedicated and competent staff, as well as its visionary leadership.
